This is a wonderful form of exercise, both for mind and body.

What is Modern Sequence Dancing?

Modern Sequence Dancing seems to have originated in France and England and there are many clubs throughout the British Isles today. This pastime has become extremely popular, with many people dancing almost every night of the week.

The dances are standard Ballroom and Latin dances, including waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, rumba etc. However, everyone dances the same 16 bar routine together. The dance steps are all standardised, with the same routine being done by everyone once a dance is announced.

Sequence dancing is sometimes introduced as an easy or social type of dance at social ballroom dances and at parties. However, this is not typical of the dancing which is done at the sequence dance clubs.  Dedicated dancers would soon become bored with the same few easy dances every week and therefore the clubs in the Cape have a different set of dances each month. A monthly dance is held each month and a programme is set up for these dances three months in advance. Some 8 dances are held the same for a couple of monthly dances in order to give newcomers a chance to learn these well.

Our clubs suit those dancers seeking a greater challenge. A new dance is taught every four months and older ones are walked through and re-taught on a regular basis. The new dances are chosen from those danced at overseas competitions and the same dances are done at all the Cape clubs.

The sequence dance clubs are run as social clubs rather than as a business and charges are very low (usually around R10 per couple per week).

To get started, all one needs to do is approach your local club and make arrangements to attend their weekly evening class.

Right of admission is reserved and subject to club agreement.
